Women Graduates up 116%: Census

Data from the 2011 Census shows that there is a massive increase in the number of women graduates in India, as compared to over a decade ago. The recent census findings show that the percentage of women seen passing out as graduates has risen by 116% and  while that of women completing their post-graduation rose by 151% between the period. The increase in percentage of male graduates was only 65%. This collaborates to the data which says that the student population has grown by 38% in same time frame.

At mid-school level the number of girls has increased by 64%, at secondary level by 50% and at senior secondary level by 146%.

Another interesting trend noticed in the recently out census figures is women getting degrees in the field of teaching and medicine, have increased by 122% and 157% respectively. Although, Engineering  has also seen an increase in the number of women engineers. The number of women in the field has grown by 326% over the same period, which in actual numbers translates to a rise from 4.8 lakh in 2001 to 20 lakh in 2011. However, male engineers, at 52 lakh are over twice the number of female engineers.

Additionally, women are increasingly opting for technical course that provide jobs, as the number of women gaining technical diplomas has increased from 0.34 million in 2011 to 19 million in 2011. The educational level of girls of seven years and above also shows an increase in numbers.
