Today, many engineers in India are unemployed. It is so either because they aren’t fit for a particular job or because the supply is exceeding the demand.

As a result, engineers have to toil harder to prove themselves fit for the job. They need to develop skills and aptitude that makes them stand out from others.

Since the first step towards the destination is getting the formal education, choosing the right engineering college becomes the most important thing.

But as the seats in the government colleges are limited, everyone cannot get into them. Keeping this in mind, I have come up with the list of top 10 private engineering colleges in India that are spread across the country.

  • Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani

Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) is among the premier engineering institutions of the country. BITS Pilani was established in the year 1964. Its campus is spread over 328 acres of land that is well equipped with all modern facilities.

Admission Criteria: Admission to UG courses is done on the basis of the entrance test, known as Birla Institute of Technology and Science Aptitude Test (BITSAT). However, for PG courses, minimum 60% of aggregate in the qualifying degree examination is required.

  • Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore

Vellore Institute of Technology is located in the Tamil Nadu state of India. The institute was primarily known as Vellore Engineering College. It was established in the year 1984. The institute is affiliated to ABET, IEI, NAAC, UGC, and University of Madras.

Admission Criteria: Admission to UG courses in done on the basis of entrance exam, namely, VITEEE. However, for PG level students have to qualify VITMEE entrance exam. Both the exams are conducted once in a year.

  • Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Gandhinagar

Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT) was founded in the year 2001. Though a newbie, it has gained a significant place in the field of education. DA-IICT is affiliated with UGC and AIU.

Admission Criteria: For UG courses, candidates will be admitted on the basis of merit and JEE Mains score. However, PG candidates are selected on the basis of valid GATE score in Computer Science/Information Technology/ Electronics & Communication/Electrical Engineering/Instrumentation/Physics/ Mathematics.

  • Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune

The Maharashtra Institute of Technology  (MIT) came into existence in the year 1983. Outlook,  a news magazine, marked MIT as the 11th finest engineering college in India. The college is affiliated with Pune University and recognized by the Government of Maharashtra and AICTE.

Admission Criteria: Admission to MIT is made on the basis of MAHCET or JEE Main score. For PG course, admission is done as per the rules of DTE, Government of Maharashtra, and Savitribai Phule Pune University.

  • Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi

The Birla Institute of Technology  (BIT), Ranchi. It was established in 1955 by an Indian Industrialist and Philanthropist, Late Shri. B. M. Birla. The institute has gained the status of Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. BIT has maintained a consistent position in the list of top engineering colleges in India.

Admission Criteria: Admission to UG courses is made on the basis of JEE Mains score. Whereas, PG level admission is done on the following basis:

  • For GATE qualified candidates:

Merit list is prepared on the basis of 80% weightage to GATE Score and 20% weightage to Class 10, 12, and graduation/post graduation marks.

  • For Non-GATE candidates:

Merit list is prepared on the basis of 80% weightage to marks obtained in Entrance Test and 20% weightage to Class 10, 12, and graduation/post graduation marks.

  • National Institute of Engineering, Mysore

The National Institute of Engineering, commonly known as NIE, was established in the year 1946. NIE is an autonomous institute that is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University. The institute is among the oldest private engineering colleges of the country.

Admission Criteria: Admission to UG and PG courses are done on the basis of COMEDK UGET and PGCET, respectively.

Top Recruiters: SAP, Google, Mercedes Benz, ABB, TVS, Oracle, Microsoft, and Deloitte.

  • PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore

With an aim to impart world-class engineering education, foster research, and development PSG College of Technology was established in the year 1951. PSG is an autonomous, government-aided private institute. It is the first private engineering institute of Tamil Nadu, founded by Dr. G.R. Damdaran.

Admission Criteria: For undergraduate courses admission is done as per the norms of Tamil Nadu government. However, PG admissions are done on the basis of GATE or TANCET scores (GATE qualified students are given first preference).

  • Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering, Bangalore

The Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering is among the earliest self-financing institutes in India. It was founded by the  Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust in the year 1963. Presently, the institution works as an autonomous institute under the Visvesvaraya Technological University. It is approved by AICTE, New Delhi,  and accredited by NBA, New Delhi.

Admission Criteria: At UG level, 45% of the total seats are for the CET, conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), 30% are for the CET conducted by COMED-K, and 25% are for management, all by merit.

For PG courses, a candidate must have a valid score in GATE or appeared in Karnataka PGCET examination, conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA).

  • Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka

The Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) is a constituent college of the Manipal University. It specializes in the fields of engineering and technology. MIT was established in the year 1957.

Admission Criteria: Admission to both the UG and the PG courses is done on the basis of entrance exam, namely, MU OET.

  • Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore

The Ramaiah Institute of Technology (RIT) was founded in the year 1962. It was formerly named as M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology. RIT works as an autonomous educational institution. In the year 2013, RIT was marked as 16th best engineering College in the country by India Today and Neilson.

Admission Criteria: Admission to both UG and PG courses is done on the basis of entrance test. For UG level, a candidate should have qualified KEA/COMEDK. However, for PG level, the candidate should be GATE/PGCET of Karnataka qualified.
