The University of Delhi (DU) has announced that it will increase its undergraduate intake after eight years. Barring certificate, postgraduate, engineering and nursing programmes, 2,330 seats will be added across various courses and colleges. This translates to more number of seats in DU for sought-after courses like Bachelor of Business Studies, Psychology, History and English. A new course in Forensic Science will also be launched in SGTB Khalsa College.
The DU Academic Council’s standing committee constituted by the DU vice-chancellor, last week, after carefully inspecting and studying the proposals, approved them, “subject to the condition that the college must appoint full time faculty and the infrastructure available to run the course effectively”. This means that the number of seats for BSc (Hons) Mathematics in DU colleges will now be increased by 322 seats in the next admission cycle which is 2016-17. Other courses that will have increased seats are BSc (Hons) Computer Science and BA (Hons) History with 230 seats each, Physics, English and Geography and BBS with 138 seats each and Chemistry with 128 seats.

Additionally, a new course, BSc (Hons) Forensic Science, will also be introduced in SGTB Khalsa College. Kamala Nehru College will become the first college to offer BA (Hons) in French. Up until now, the course was being offered only at the department level. Courses that see a large number of applications like Statistics, Zoology , Botany, Psychology , Applied Psychology , English Journalism and Philosophy , will be offered in more and new DU colleges.
“This increase means increased workload and more faculty positions. During OBC expansion, funds were provided for that. While Delhi government funded colleges may find it easy to increase the intake, those run by trusts will have to approach University Grants Commission for funding. Besides, the increase in seats will first have to be sanctioned by UGC,” a senior DU official said.
