For the third year consecutively, the student union elections of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have been scheduled on the same day, as that of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) polls. Both the student union body elections will take place on September 11 this year.
The dates for DUSU Elections were announced earlier, whereas the JNUSU Elections were announced on August 30. Both the universities have elected Chief Election Officers, and other officers of the Elections Body. Both the student representative body elections are keenly followed, however, differences among the two polls are aplenty. For instance, candidates at JNU are also supposed to make speeches about their agenda followed by a round of questions at the “Presidential Debate”.
DU, where presently campaigning is underway, and is only set to intensify in the coming days leading to the polls, will see the student wing of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) making its debut. In JNU however, focus on the speeches, and the US-styled Presidential Debate are the major deciding factors.
Nomination Papers have to be filed in JNU by September 1, whereas in DU, the deadline for the same is September 2. The Presidential Debate will be held on September 9 in JNU, and the results will most likely be declared by September 13. Last year, Left-backed All India Students’ Association (AISA) emerged victorious at the JNUSU polls bagging all the top four positions, including the President’s post, for the second consecutive year. Elections at both the varsities will be under much scrutiny, much like every other year.
