The career in foreign languages is emerging as a new trend in the country. Every year, a large chunk of students enroll in foreign language institutes.

Rekha V. Rajan, Professor at the Centre for German Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University says, “A career in foreign languages is becoming an attractive proposition. More and more avenues are opening up in tourism and call centers. Whether it is the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) or publishing houses, they are all making a beeline for foreign language experts.’’

Nowadays, gaining a degree in foreign language is considered as a full-fledged career option. Other than Spanish, German & French, languages like Chinese, Korean and Japanese are also available with great career prospects for the students.

“More students are making a beeline for Japanese than any language.’’ says Prof. Sushma Jain of the School of Languages, Jawaharlal Nehru University.

In contradiction with the market demand for foreign language experts, the supply is very scanty. Our country has a large number of experts in the English language, but it faces the severe shortage of people who know French, German, Chinese or any other foreign language.

As per the present trend, it is evident that professionals with a foreign language learning degree are in dire need. Students are available with ample of lucrative options in both domestic and global market.

• School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University

The School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (SLL&CS) has been a major center in India as well as abroad for learning Indian, Asian and European languages since its inception in 1969.

It is the only school in the country that offers a B.A. program in the Korean language.

Eligibility: The minimum eligibility for a B.A. program in a foreign language is 10+2 or equivalent. Whereas for the Proficiency courses, one need to qualify the relevant written examination.

• Jawaharlal Nehru Academy of Foreign Languages

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Jawaharlal Nehru Academy of Languages is one of the oldest institutions in the Capital offering intensive courses in foreign languages.

French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Portuguese are amongst some of the languages provided by this institute.

Eligibility: Those who have passed 10+2 or equivalent are eligible to apply for these courses. The admission is done on the first-come-first-serve basis.

• Delhi University

Delhi University is another great option available to students willing to pursue their career in foreign languages. Its colleges provide a variety of courses in the foreign languages.

The Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, the Department of Slavonic and Finno-Ugrian Studies, St. Stephens College, Ramjas College, Khalsa College, Miranda House, Daulat Ram College, College of Vocational Studies, Sri Venkateswara College, Hindu College, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, Zakir Hussain College are amongst the major colleges in Delhi University, providing course in foreign languages.

Eligibility: One needs, to begin with, the Certificate course to learn any language, for which the minimum eligibility is 10+2 or equivalent.

• Max Mueller Bhavan

The Goethe-Institut, New Delhi also known as Max Mueller Bhavan is the best-known center in the city for German courses.  In addition to general language courses covering all levels for adults and teens, it also includes a broad range of special courses as well as company courses.

The Institute offers several extensive and intensive courses in the German language to its students.

Those who cannot attend a regular classroom course at an institute, distance learning, and blended courses are a good alternative for them.

Eligibility: The participant must be at least 17 years of age to pursue the respective course from the Institute.

• Institute for Career Studies, YMCA

The Institute for Career Studies (ICS) of Young Men’s Christian Association, YMCA provides various courses in foreign languages. The ICS was formed in 1972, which was formerly known as the Institute for Civil Services.

The institute offers 1-year Diploma course in French, German, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. All the courses conducted by the Institute are updated time to time to provide students with the latest information about the relevant course.

• Instituto Hispania

The Instituto Hispania was founded in 1997 with the mission to promote Spanish language and culture in the country. It is registered under the Indian Registration Act.

The society is affiliated to FIDESCU (Ministry of Education, Spain), which implies that they are eligible to conduct International Certifications for language enthusiasts who wish to test their knowledge of Spanish at the international level.

• Alliance Francaise

The Foundation Alliance Francaise was founded in 1884 in Paris. It is officially recognized as a non-profit organization and represents the moral and legal referent of the Alliances Françaises throughout the world.

It aims to promote French language and culture around the world. In 2014, the Alliance had 850 centers in 137 countries, on five continents.
