Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Education Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday brought to speed President of India, Pranab Mukherjee of the AAP’s plans to revamp schools and curriculum in the national capital region. In the meeting, Kejriwal and Sisodia told the President that the government is set to rectify the ballooning teacher-student ratio in government schools, with over 20,000 new teachers being recruited soon. They also said 45 new schools and 12,000 new classrooms in existing schools have been sanctioned.
The AAP government announced plans of recruiting 20,000 new teachers soon.
Presently, several classes in Delhi schools have more than 100 students being taught by a single teacher. Sisodia promised to ensure clean and separate toilets for boys and girls, safe drinking water, science laboratories and other activity rooms in all schools across the capital. “CCTVs are being installed in all classrooms to monitor teacher and student behavior and also in corridors to ensure safety of children,” said Sisodia at the meeting. “All principals are being given complete financial autonomy to function effectively. In return, there will be clear accountability parameters. That apart, 54 schools have been taken up on a pilot basis to improve the quality of education. On the basis of how these schools perform, others will be covered next year. The syllabus is being reduced by 25 per cent on the basis of feedback from teachers and principals to enable students to participate in extra-curricular activities,” he added.
